Col du Tourmalet has previously played a major role during the Tour de France and has left many viewers speechless by the dramas that the riders make on the legendary peak in the Pyrenees.

The ninth and 160 kilometer long stage between Saint-Gaudens and Tarbes seemed to become another entertaining refreshment in the summer heat. But Tour de France is often unpredictable and has been just that in first week of this year's edition of the race.

Team Saxo Bank's German Jens Voigt was in early breakaway but he later fell back to the peloton. He left his two companions Pellizotti (Liquigas) and Fedrigo (Bbox) who set a bold pace as they entered the 2115 meter high mountain pass. Behind them followed a nine-man group of pursuers with among others Paulinho (Astana) which soon engulfed Jens Voigt in the bare landscape of historic achievements over the tree line.

But the prepared and expected firework of attacks on the climb never came and the modest pace of the main field was ruled by Nocentinis Team AG2R, which clearly indicated a ceasefire between the favorites.
On top of the Col du Tourmalet Pellizotti was the first man to pass and the duo was less than five minutes ahead of the field and three minutes in front of the next group. From here the course developed into an exciting pursue and first the Paulinho-group was inhaled by the main field and then became a battle between the two riders in the front group versus Rabobank and Caisse d'Epargne.

And the two riders showed impressing stamina as they had a two minute lead to the two chasing teams with fifteen kilometres to go.
And with half a minute lead on the very last kilometer there was no time for foreplay between the two riders and even though Pellizotti looked strong Fedrigo (Bbox) passed him on the last meters in a convincing sprint and took the stage win.

"The plan was to go along if any of the favorites made a move which unfortunately was a little boring to watch. Jens tried to go but unfortunately he wasn't able to follow the pace. After the first week of the Tour, we can conclude that we are well-positioned in the GC since the route so far has not really invited to wild attacks on our part. We are also happy to have dominated the first week by taking the yellow jersey from the first stage. I believe the riders are happy about a well deserved rest day, "concluded Bjarne Riis after the ninth stage.

And Team Saxo Bank's German engine, Jens Voigt, agreed:

“I have previously been quoted for saying that I'm getting too old for breakaways but today I was motivated by these exact words. Unfortunately I was not able to keep up with the pace of Pellizotti and Fedrigo. Instead I got the chance of helping Andy who had a puncture at a very critical moment a few kilometres from the finish line. Now I'm looking forward for the rest day tomorrow”, told a tired Jens Voigt after the stage.

Today's stage left no changes in the top of the GC. Tomorrow the riders can relax on the first rest day of the Tour. Tuesday th peloton is moving out on the undulating stage to Issoudun.
